The Software-Defined Storage: confronting the explosion in data volume

The Software-Defined Storage (SDS) makes its appearance in a technological era of upheaval linked to the explosion of the amount of digital data. But investing in an increasingly important infrastructure to absorb an amount of data to exponential growth is not sustainable. It is therefore necessary to rethink storage. SDS appears as one of the most credible solutions. Explanations.

The promise of the SDS is to decouple hardware and software layers in the storage systems. This concept, in constant evolution, however, is difficult to define; the definition is itself changeable. Until our next webinar on Software-Defined Storage Wednesday, November 18 at 13:30 here is some information on the subject.

The operation of the SDS
The management of the storage space is provided by the software and not the hardware infrastructure. The principle is to create a level of abstraction between the physical and applications. This layer between the hardware of software aggregates different resources and transforms them into generic volumes, to make compatible different storage systems. With SDS, all storage media can operate on a network, allowing administrators to easily allocate storage on one of the network drives. Storage management is greatly facilitated since the management and allocation of resources receive interfaces to add or remove capacity, or migrate with ease storage arrays.

The diagram below shows the SDS layer between infrastructure and applications resources are aggregated into “pools” where they will be formatted and standardized.

The SDS promises
Using the SDS so lets glimpse multiple possibilities including:

1 – The scaling (or scalability): because the SDS is to decouple hardware and software within the same infrastructure, it allows to add new storage capacity with minimal impact on the management layer .

2 – The independence vis-à-vis suppliers of Hardware: SDS limit dependence on a hardware provider. The company can retain its storage system composed of heterogeneous materials that SDS load unify.

3 – Cost  reduction: the storage infrastructure can evolve more modular way. It can also be based on the equipment (hardware) trivialized. In addition, open source solutions are maturing, thereby lowering licensing costs ..

What a difference between SDS and virtual storage?
This technology is reminiscent of the virtual storage. Yet it is important to know the difference between these two types of storage:

The virtual storage  can give the appearance of uniqueness by virtually bringing together storage spread across different machines or storage arrays.
The SDS  does not partition the storage platforms but separates certain features of the physical storage platform.
Optimization of storage space, scalability, price …
These contributions generate significant enthusiasm among global players in storage, in a sector that is consolidating, as evidenced by the acquisition of EMC by Dell. All this excitement caused by the arrival of this technology makes me think that we are at the dawn of a storage revolution. The subject of the SDS not only promises to revolutionize the storage industry, but all industries that depend on them, and companies that use the Cloud.
